The Wiseguy Cookbook: My Favorite Recipes from My Life As a Goodfella to Cooking on the Run
Published in Paperback by New American Library Trade (October, 2002)
Authors: Henry Hill, Priscilla Davis, and Nicholas Pileggi
Average review score:

Excellent Instruction and an Entertaining Read
If you want to learn how to cook the most Italian of all American Italian food -- New York style Italian -- buy this book. The conversational style was so enjoyable, I hated the book to end. Not your average cookbook experience.

The way The Wiseguy Cookbook is set up: there are lots of bold insets to give you tips on improving the dish or sometimes more importantly what NOT to do. Between recipes, Henry gives an account of his considerable kitchen experience, beginning in his childhood. This gives a story-telling feel to the book which is quite entertaining.

I learned lots of helpful advice in this book and my Italian food, which was already good, has finally earned an A rating from my husband. If you're reading this, thanks Henry!

A criminally good cookbook
Yeah, I know. No one's holding a gun to my head. But Henry's book is a classic.

I'm a longtime crook, er, cook, and I found that the thoroughness and thought behind these recipes elevated it into the small realms of "best cookbooks I've ever read."

Yeah, I know. From some "rat fork" like Henry. But it's good, really, really good.

He goes through a money-laundry list of typical Bronx-Italian recipes--all the standards, like Sunday Gravy, ziti, pizza, even the infamous scungilli--each one embellished with some anecdote of his life on the run. From supreme wealth and access to the finest authentic ingredients on his home criminal turf to the handful of homogenized American choices from Middle America while penniless on the run. And they're all forkin' good!

Christ, his handlers even get addicted to Henry's cooking, and I can see why: every recipe I made with this book--and I've been around the world a few times--was a hit.

Nothing criminal about that.

Joe Dogs, watch your back.

There's the Sopranos, and then there's the Goodfellas
Don't dis the Sopranos book -- just don't say it's the same thing as this. The Sopranos Family Cookbook is marketing with good recipes, whereas Henry Hill's masterpiece here is as much a retelling of his biography as it is an excellent Sicilian-American cookbook with a heavy emphasis on making do when you can't get what you need.

I think the recipe that sums this book up best is the Oven Penitentiary Sauce, a concoction that Henry and his prison buddies cooked up for those days when the guards have taken all your pots and pans away and all you've got is the steam table pans and the prison bakery. The whole book is like that -- real food, salvaged when something goes wrong. Lots of Italian, but a few surprises from other parts of the country (particularly the South), reflecting Henry's travels in Witness Protection. Substitutions are a big deal too -- from the pork-for-veal scam Hill learned as a kid working in a pizzeria all the way up. Hill's message to cooks: you can always find a way to make it work.

At my bookstore we sold a couple of hundred copies of the Sopranos book over the Holidays, and that was pretty cool. But I had two standard recommendations to go along with that -- Italian Classics from Cooks Illustrated and this one. Of all three (and I say buy them all), fuhgeddaboutit, this is the best -- it's very autobiographical, and will leave you very, very hungry at the end.

E2 Using the Power of Ethics and Etiquette in American Business

About Time This Book Was Written
If I'd found this book 10 years ago I'd have avoided a ton of mistakes and heartache. I can not speak high enough praise about E2 or Phyllis Davis for writing it. Someone has finally figured out an easy-to-understand solution to about everything that confuses and confounds all of us about business. How do you shake hands with your boss? Is there a right way to exchange business cards? Why is customer service so horrible when Davis has solved it for everyone? If you are a businessperson, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. No.. this is an ESSENTIAL BOOK.
Dr. Cynaumon

Reviving the Power of Etiquette
I loved this book! It's a quick, yet thorough read for busy entrepreneurs and anyone needing to brush up on business etiquette. Did I say brush up? How about learning things they never taught us in business school? Phyllis Davis captures the essence of business etiquette for those wanting to increase their visibility, make an impact, and influence others. Because so many businesses have become so casual, it's easy to forget these basic skills. In an economic downturn with fewer job openings and with so many qualified people applying for those jobs, the person with the edge will get the job. This book helps you gain that edge, whether it's in how you introduce your self, to the quality of the e-mail you send, to the approach you use during a meeting.

Surveys on what makes leaders successful continually point to effective communication and listening skills. This book gives a four-step formula for Active Listening that I am sharing with all my clients. I particularly like the format of the book, i.e. discussion, checklists, case studies, and chapter summaries. E-2 should be a handy reference for any employee and can be particularly beneficial to business development and sales and marketing individuals.

A Rejuvination of Grace and Power in American Business
First and foremost, the author, Phyllis Davis walks, talks and lives as second nature every point, exercise, and methodology taught and expressed in her book. As an eloquent speaker, she provides a glimpse of the detailed information, research and historical data outlined in E2.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading E2. The information is not only useful but imperative to business practices in the millenium. The case studies demonstrate how to use the information for optimum results. From college graduate to CEO, this book provides something for everyone.
Many will agree that "being on time means being early" is the way that business is accomplished today. From the subtle yet important instruction such as "sit on the edge of your seat while awaiting a meeting" to more obvious yet often disregarded "techno ethics", E2 never misses a beat. Everything you ever wanted to know about what is appropriate and inappropriate for business is in E2.
If you want to become powerful and respected or if you are powerful and desire grace, read E2.
Phyllis Davis is the "Dale Carnegie/Amy Vanderbilt" of business in the millenium. E2 is the bible for the next generation of business practices and conduct.

Start thinking your way to success!
High Performance Thinking is an excellent source for anyone who wants to start using their thoughts to create success in any area of their life. It is was so easy to read, I felt as if Dr. Davis was speaking to me in a casual conversation. If you want to think your way to success, this is the book for you!

Psychology reference manual -- you will want to reread it!
Dr. Davis uses analogies and terminology that are easily understandable, and, therefore, easily applicable. Her ability to communicate her ideas into simple explanations makes this book an easy read that doesn't become overwhelming with overemphasis on psychoanalysis. Instead, she cites examples that relay her message and can be utilized in all areas of life. This book is a reference manual that would be frequently used over a period time and applicable to a gamut of situations and circumstances. It's terrific!

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL!
What a WONDERFUL book! I have been fortunate to have heard Dr. Gayle Davis speek a number of times and reading this book brought back ALL the great ideas that she shared through the talks. After reading the book from cover to cover I now use it as a daily thought book -- I jsut open it up to whatever page it happens to open to and think about what is on those pages. It is a GREAT way to start the day off on a positive track! This book is a MUST READ for everyone in all professions and ages... Thanks Dr. Davis for sharing your wisdom through the written word!

Great Book !
I got this book for my 2 year old daughter and she LOVES it! She really enjoys "reading" it herself. The illustrations are simple and very bright and colorful. The repetitive nature of it, makes it easier for her to "read" and remember. GREAT JOB - Katie Davis !

A great book to keep a toddler's interest!
This is my son's favorite book - at 22 months he was asking for it by name! The bold, colorful illustrations keep his attention and he laughs as we turn the pages. My only problem is that he wants me to read it again and again!

A Family Favorite
I loved using "Who Hops" in my first grade classroom where the children delighted at the silly pictures and the simple text was perfect for their emerging reading skills. Now that I am a mother of a one year old I have fallen in love with this book all over again. My little guy thrills at the bold bright illustrations and the text is fast paced enough to hold his attention through several readings. This book is an all time favorite of mine and a must for any little person's library!

Life Teachings: Raising a Child
Published in Paperback by Yellow House Productions (12 November, 1999)
Authors: Jeanie Pullen and Jeanie Davis Pullen
Average review score:

Endearing and stimulating insight on child raising
Jeanie Davis Pullen gives an concise in-depth view of her approach to raising children. This book is brilliantly laid out and well written with a collection of short stories covering many aspects of child raising. This book can be read easily by busy parents, prospective parents, busy college students, or anybody who ponders about their own childhood experiences and how they may someday contribute to a child's education as a parent, a teacher, a scout-leader, a sports coach... Each chapter describes in a precise and endearing manner a particular aspect of child raising and can be read within 10 minutes. Together, all the short stories in this book form a balanced collection of food for thought towards child rearing. Jeanie Davis Pullen accomplishes this task in a personal manner which remains respectful of the reader's own experiences and views on child raising.

This book is an interesting and empowering read for all!
In this book Life Teachings:Raising a Child, the author has clearly captured many of the most highly desirable adult traits one would strive to develop in their children. In a story telling manner, she speaks of her familys' experiences related to child rearing and invites the reader to consider them while in the process of raising their own children. Equally compelling to me is the unspoken invitation to look at the ways in which we ourselves were raised and the inherent results. I found this collection of child rearing experiences to be an easy but thoughtful read. Also when one or more of the many ideas appealed to me I was given examples of ways to incorporate those teachings into my daily parenting. I liked that! It is a delightful book where one set of parents shares their successful method of child raising with others.

Sharing Wisdom with Your Children
"In our lives, people and experiences have formed who we are at this moment. From the time we are born until we die, people and experiences show us a way to conduct our lives."

Jeanie Davis Pullen remembers how wisdom was passed from adult to child in a more relaxed setting. In a time when family "matters" were settled on the porch with a glass of ice tea in a easy, musing fashion. Her parents didn't have to be experts, they just learned from their own experiences.

Jeanie is an educator, consultant and speaker with an advanced degree in gifted education. She also teaches high school and graduate courses at the university level.

Jeanie has often been asked to give talks about child raising, communication and growth paths in education and life. She has raised two daughters who are now successfully living their own lives. Over the years, people also started asking Jeanie to write about the importance of an individual creating a responsible, personal way of life.

The first story is about how the author is listening to her two daughters having a conversation in their late twenties. She began to wonder how children developed to this point. How they became happy, confident adults who contributed positively to society.

In the second chapter we learn about the list the author made in order to guide herself in parenting. She wanted her daughters to have a love of words, be confident, have wisdom, be able to see beauty in everyday things and have a sense of wonderment.

I love the way this book is written, it is really a conversation with the reader. I'm pretty sure you are supposed to be sitting in a rocking chair on a porch while reading this book. ;)

Jeanie really pours out her thoughts and they are quite refreshing. She explains how she discovered that "respect" was a huge over-arching theme, how she made time for her children and the beautiful way she taught her children to get her attention even if she was talking to someone (I don't think "mom," "mom," "mom," "mom" worked well for me as a child.;). I love her idea but I'll let you read about it!

This book is so filled with wisdom. Not only does the author want to encourage her children to be the best they can be, she makes agreements with them so they are "in on the process."

The thoughts in this book are so beautiful. "Play" becomes "her daughers' work." Play becomes highly valued as a learning experience. She buys her children beautiful books that they can keep, so they have permanent books in their lives.

Through memories of her own childhood and memories of beautiful moments in her own children's lives, Jeanie brings together a collection of heartfelt stories to inspire parents to love and appreciate their children and the moments they have to teach them valuable lessons in life.

A beautiful gift for all parents and the children who will benefit from their wisdom.

The language of medicine : a write-in text explaining medical terms
Published in Unknown Binding by Saunders ()
Author: Davi-Ellen Chabner

Buy this book if you want to really learn your medical terms
I bought this book as a requirement for an independent study course. I wasn't required to buy the sixth edition but I did just the same and I found I made the right decision. I found the material easy to read with a friendly tone and an extremely useful presentation. The layout of the chapters and the excercises provided helped me to clearly understand, use, and learn the terms. I worked on this book without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting and I feel this book has made the difference between just memorizing material for a later test and really knowing the terms. Also, the CD-ROM that comes with this book made an excellent reference aid and a perfect way to test and reinforce my knowledge. (Clicking on the "figure" button in the multi-media program yielded some interesting surprises) As a result of using this book, I was able to achieve an excellent mark in the Medical Terminology module of my independent study course. I would recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to know their medical terms for any health related field.

Great Way to Learn Medical Terminology
This book by Chabner is designed to help the premedical professional learn terminology by teaching how to break words apart and decode their meaning. Each chapter has a review of a specific topic and provides many opportunities, at the end of each chapter, to practice and review the material covered. The CD is the best part because it helps break up some of the monotony of learning the numerous prefixes, suffixes and word roots. The end of the book provides appendices for medical abbreviations, formulas and measurement. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn medical terminology.

Great Book!
I love this book. I have had no prior medical terminology experience. This book is practical and laid out in an easy to understand format. It is a textbook with plenty of review exercises at the end of each chapter as well as interactive exercises on the CD. When you complete a chapter with all of the exercises you will know and understand the information presented. The text is arranged by body system which makes learning easier.

When Words Are Not Enough

Unbelievably Clear, Compassionate and Validating
I had been a psychotherapist for many years (and still am) and mother of two when I developed postpartum depression after the birth of my second child. I never thought it could/would happen to me. Well it did and now, more than two years after the fact, I immediately burst into tears after reading this book...why didn't anyone tell me then what this book told me now? Besides being clear and understandable about medicine and other treatment approaches, Dr. Raskin's voice is deeply compassionate: I have finally started to let go of the shame and tell my story, which represents one of the darkest periods of my life. Besides that, I have been recommending this book to my own primary care doctor, therapist, colleagues, clinical consultant...basically to everyone I know who is in a position to help women with postpartum and other depressions, OCD and anxiety. If you are a woman struggling with any of the above conditions, do not delay in getting your hands on this book. This book is outstanding!

Gives women an informed choice about their mental health!
I came across this book when I was pregnant with my first child and taking antidepressants and still feeling guilty about it. Dr. Raskin explained in clear terms the effects, risks, and benefits of psychotropic medications for women and allowed me to really believe that I had made the right decision to continue antidepressants during pregnancy. The risks of depression were greater than the risks of Prozac and for the first time, I felt that I had strong support for my decision. I recommended the book to my OB, psychiatrist, therapist, and many of my friends. By the way, I now have a beautiful, healthy son and have been able to enjoy and care for him because of antidepressants.

I am also a mental health professional and have recommended the book to many of my colleagues. I think it is a must read for any health professional who works with women, and for any woman considering medication to treat her depression, anxiety, or other mental illness. It is a fair, non-judgmental, and informative book that will always be a part of my library. Today I am ordering my second copy because I lent out my original copy and never got it back!!! This book may save lives by helping women to get better treatment and have a better understanding of their options. Thank you, Dr. Raskin.

Sympathetic and informative
I consider this the best book to start with if you are a woman wondering if you have depression and/or a companion illness, or a woman who has been diagnosed and is deciding which treatment to try. Depression (including premenstrual depression), anxiety disorder, OCD and sleep disturbances and available medication and non-medication options are explored thoroughly and clearly by Dr. Raskin.

What sets this book apart from other depression/medication books is that it addresses women's particular concerns, largely neglected by the others. Topics I am often asked about on my web site (and have not had good answers for) such as pregnancy/breastfeeding and medication and weight gain as a side effect of medication are discussed in a sympathetic, informative manner. Essential information about antidepressants and anti-anxiety medication, including side-effects, usual dose ranges and pregnancy ratings round out "When Words Are Not Enough," making it a very complete resource for women.

Baby-Sitting Is a Dangerous Job

Perfect for a baby-sitter
From the moment that Darcy set her eyes on the three foster kids, she knew that baby-sitting would not be a "fun" job. Even though the pay was twice her rate, was only for a few hours a day, and Darcy was an experienced baby-sitter, she didn't count on the mysterious things that started happening at the children's house after she took the job. She did everything a good baby-sitter was supposed to do. She didn't let the stranger saying he was from the gas company into the house, and she called the police when the house alarm went off in the middle of the afternoon. All of a sudden, a strange thing happens, and now it is up to Darcy to rescue the foster kids and herself from three dangerous kidnappers.

This book is full of suspense. That's why it's interesting to read. Once you start reading you can't stop. You just keep on turning the pages. Will Darcy be able to save herself and the kids? If you want to find out, read the book and get caught up in the great adventure with Darcy and the three kids.

It's a great book and very exciting!
I liked this book because everytime you turn around something exciting happens! The characters are fit for the book.I liked the main character, Darcy, because in the end she is very brave. This book has exciting, mischievious characters. The baby-sitter,Darcy Stevens, gets interviewed at this "high-quality" house. She gets the job and finds out that the children are pests! The second day as she was finishing making lunch ,when all of the sudden the burgular alarm went off!The police come and search, but there's no one around. The police leave and a few minutes later... If you want to know what happens you'll have to read on!So hurry up! It's to exciting to wait!

Incredible!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite books. I don't usually enjoy this type of book but there is something about the style of writing that that just made me love it!

Garfield at Large

GARFIELD IS FOR THE KID IN ALL OF US
On June 19, 2001 Garfield celebrated his twenty-third birthday, sleeping away the special occasion. I have been an avid fan and follower of Garfield since his birth, and I would not miss a day without first turning to the comic page of the newspaper to see what this loveable, huggable critter was up to. He has cheered me up through family deaths and tragedies, the joys and tribulations of motherhood, a marriage break-up, a re-marriage, the births and deaths of several of my own cats, and still remains one of life's treasured, light-hearted moments.

Like all Garfield books, each one is just as enjoyable and comical as the last. This one is no exception. What more can one possibly say about this feline wonder, or the book. Garfield is laughable, loveable, zany and his antics can often "make my day." Buy the book, it will warm your heart and bring laughter to your soul...definitely a five-star plus!

A truly great, truly funny comic series
It seems every time I pick up a Garfield book I can't put it down. The books are simple, funny and unforgettable. Sure, most of the books have the same type of jokes and plots, but they are always treated differently so they don't get old. It's also neat to see how much Garfield has changed throughout the years. In the first book he is a really big cat, but in the newer books/strips he is much thinner and walking on two legs! I definitely recommend all Garfield books to all people. They're sure to brighten a dull day!

Clone Jim Davis!!
This book review is in honor of my big brother, Jeff Tibbitt.
We grew up together on Garfield books, and I hope that someday my children will also enjoy them.

The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook

Authors: Martha Davis, Matthew, Ph.D. McKay, and Elizabeth Robbins Eshelman
Average review score:

A Cornucopia Of Coping Strategies
Brew yourself a cup of your favorite herbal tea and curl up in a quiet corner because you're in for a treat. This book is exactly what the title says it is - a workbook for relaxation and stress reduction - and its user-friendly style enables the reader to dip into any chapter at will and derive something useful and informative from it. The book's orientation is very much a holistic approach and the authors' emphasis on mental coping methods dovetails nicely with the chapters on reducing physical stress symptoms. I found the progressive relaxation guidance (including instructions for creating your own tape) particulary well done and helpful. As the authors make so clear, many of us are unaware of how and where we store our tension and how our breathing impacts our ability to move from a stress response to relaxation. Methods such as progressive relaxation - systematically tensing and relaxing all the large muscle groups in the body - aid in gaining awareness of what we are experiencing physically both during stress and in relaxation. The book also discusses goals, time management, nutrition and exercise, with copious worksheets for the reader to dissect which area(s) he or she most needs to focus on to achieve more individual balance, and therefore less stress. The end of each chapter includes suggestions for further reading, providing the reader a jumping off point for deeper work in a particular area, if needed. Each chapter is a module for bringing about psyche/soma homeostasis. The book's one drawback in my view is the length of the personal stress analysis worksheets. One is of course free to skip over them or complete only a portion of each one. Overall though, the book provides a palatable plethora of nurturing and nourishing ideas and methods for bringing mind, body and spirit to a place of respite and repose, whatever one's outer circumstances may be.

Classic, bible in its field
This is one of, if not the best books on stress management and relaxation. It is a must have for health care providers working in this area, and an incredible resource for laymen seeking personal help or self growth.

I've recommended this book to probably 1000 psychologists, and as a specialty dealer of products for stress management, relaxation training and biofeedback, I know that at least 600-800 actually bought copies. Many of the ones I suggested it to already owned the book and I was always happy they did, because then, they knew I made credible recommendations.

The book offers a wealth of beautifully, simply explained exercises and techniques you can use immediately to learn to relax and cope with stress more effectively.

The best book on the subject I have seen...clear and concise
I must have bought countless books on relaxation and meditation in order to relieve stress. For the most part I found non-objective, very subjective eastern treatises pushing a philosophy or dogma. These books were not very well structured in explaining how to use the techniques. This book, approaches relaxation methods in a scientific manner. Each chapter is about one method, telling what type of attitude works best in its use, the variations of the method (based on effect) and the time that is necessary to see the effects. The methods are explained in a "cookbook" manner. The steps of the methods are clear and explained well. These methods are treated as templates for anybody to use, without implying inferences as to what philosophy of life is correct. I don't think I have ever recommended a book before (heuristic: 90% of all books say the same thing), but since this one follows such a well defined format, I will. Enjoy.
